On the upper reaches of the Tama River in western Tokyo, the banks are lined with small tea houses, coffee shops, and restaurants. Each one vies to make itself stand out from the others by displaying handmade art. This piece was particularly eye-catching.
In December, my father came to visit me in Japan for the first time. After more than a year of reading this blog, he was ready to get a look at the hidden nature of Japan. As he set eyes on the upper reaches of the Tama River for the first time, I took this picture.
