Off the Beaten Path, Japan #21: Neighborhood Garden

Brilliantly orange flowers in a garden in Kinshicho

While wandering my local neighborhood of Tokyo, Kinshicho, I found these orange flowers growing in a garden outside an elementary school near my apartment. It looked so good I had to take a shot, and this is what I got. It looks so perfect you’d think it was photoshopped, but actually I only added some relatively heavy vignetting to cut down on peripheral distractions. What do you think?

Off the Beaten Path Japan, #21: Kasai Ferris Wheel

The ferris wheel in Kasai Rinkai Park

Another photo from my visit to Kasai Rinkai Park several weeks ago with model Gwyneira Li. Though she wasn’t the shot, she was right beside me as I took it. Just moments before, I took this gorgeous shot with her in the frame. Be sure to check it out too!

Off the Beaten Path, Japan #19: Sunset Slopes

Fairyland Sunset in Japan’s Southern Alps

A photo that I overlooked from my first attempt at a mountain photoshoot with my dSLR. Despite not really knowing what I was doing at the time, even an novice can’t fail in a place like this.

Off the Beaten Path, Japan #18: Kanna Lake

Mountains fold into mountains beyond the shores of the lake

When I visited Kanna Lake, I remember being really disappointed with the photos I took. It was winter, and everything was grey and brown, and the lack of color caused the photos to suffer. But then I decided to experiment with black and white, which I’d never tried before. The result was rather pleasing, I think. What do you think? Leave a comment below!

Off the Beaten Path, Japan #16: Tokyo Ferris Wheel

The Ferris wheel in Kasai Rinkai Park, Tokyo

One of Tokyo’s lesser known but still fantastic green spaces is Kasai Rinkai Park, near the border of Chiba. It’s most iconic aspect is this large Ferris wheel, which is visible from quite a distance away. I was lucky enough to visit on a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon.

Model Gwyneira Li poses with flowers

When we visit Japan, all too often we get so wound up in the tourist destinations to get down to earth with everyday life. Today, we take a trip to Tsukuba University, where model Gwyneira Li, a exchange student from China, poses by a patch of flowers on campus shortly after her graduation ceremony.
